Summer Field Studies

Finding myself in various leadership positions, I have used my abilities and talents to create space for in depth communication, direction, and development. I led two retreats while in high school, both of which I demonstrated my coaching, listening, and team building skills. The summer following my junior year of high school, I attended a program by the name “Summer Field Studies,” run by Roncalli High School, located on the southside of Indianapolis.

This program, designed to be part academics, part adventure, and part retreat, involves a large group of high school juniors and seniors embarking on a two week hiking trip out west to Colorado. The purpose of the adventure is to explore the beauty of nature, to learn from the wilderness, and to grow in faith. After having such an amazing experience in high school, I was compelled to come back again as a leader to accompany younger students on their own journey of spiritual and personal growth.

I was thrilled to have been selected from the pool of returning applicants for this opportunity to serve my community through this leadership position. I am able to contribute to my community through being a staff member on a high school adventure trip. On the trip, I am able to share my passion for hiking and be an example of love and faith to all the high school students who participate. I have now been on staff for three years and will be going on my fourth trip as a leader this upcoming summer.

The engaged learning experiences and leadership positions I hold are crucial to my success as an honors student as well as my success as a professional. Through these experiences, I am able to bring applicable skills into the workplace including team building, time management, and 'on your toes' problem solving. I will hone my skills of being an effective communicator, leader, and problem solver in order to better serve myself and my community in the years to come.
